In Nigeria, customers don't fill contact forms. They send a WhatsApp message and expect a quick reply. For a busy business owner, that means answering the same questions all day: How much? Where are you located? Do you deliver? Are you open on Sunday?
AI chatbots solve this, and building them is one of the most in-demand automation skills you can sell.
Two ways to automate WhatsApp
1. The WhatsApp Business app. Free, and enough for small businesses. It offers greeting messages, away messages, quick replies, labels and a product catalogue. It is not true AI, but it saves real time and is easy to set up for a client in an afternoon.
2. The WhatsApp Business Platform. This is the route for full AI automation. Businesses connect through Meta's Cloud API or an approved provider, and an AI can read and reply to messages automatically. Meta charges for certain message types, so check current pricing before quoting.
Many freelancers start clients on the app, then upgrade them to the Platform as their volume grows.
Website chatbots: the other option
Not every business needs WhatsApp automation first. A chat widget on the website, powered by AI and trained on the business's FAQs, can handle questions and capture leads. Many chatbot builders support both website chat and WhatsApp from one setup.
Step by step: build an AI support chatbot
- Gather the knowledge. Collect FAQs, prices, delivery areas, opening hours, refund policy and payment options. Messy knowledge means messy answers.
- Define the scope. Decide what the bot answers, what it collects, and what it must pass to a human.
- Choose the platform. Use a chatbot builder with WhatsApp support, or connect the WhatsApp Cloud API to a tool like n8n or Make. Our guide to building AI agents without coding covers the agent side.
- Write the instructions. Set the tone, the rules, and what to say when it doesn't know. Good prompt engineering makes the difference here.
- Connect the knowledge. Upload the FAQ document or link a sheet of products and prices so answers stay current.
- Build the human handoff. Complaints, complex orders and upset customers should reach a staff member quickly.
- Test with real messages. Use 30 genuine past customer messages, including Pidgin and mixed-language ones, and fix every weak answer.
- Launch and monitor. Review conversations weekly for the first month and improve the bot.
Follow WhatsApp's rules
- Businesses generally need customer opt-in before sending them marketing or other business-initiated messages.
- Outside the customer-service window after a customer's last message, businesses must use approved message templates.
- Never use bots for spam or bulk unsolicited messages. Numbers can be restricted or banned.
Rules change, so check Meta's current WhatsApp Business policies for each project.
Keep the chatbot accurate
- Tell the bot to answer only from the business's information and to say a team member will help if it isn't sure.
- Update prices and stock information whenever they change, ideally from a sheet the client can edit.
- Make it clear to customers that they're chatting with an automated assistant.
- Never let the bot confirm payments on its own. A human or the payment system should verify every transaction.
Packages you can offer
- Quick start: WhatsApp Business app setup with greeting, away messages, quick replies, labels and catalogue.
- AI assistant: a full AI chatbot on WhatsApp or the website, with human handoff.
- Ongoing care: monthly monitoring, updates and improvement, ideal as a retainer.
Frequently asked questions
Do customers mind talking to a chatbot?
Most customers care about fast, correct answers. They get frustrated when a bot traps them, so always make it easy to reach a human.
Can the chatbot understand Pidgin or local languages?
Modern AI models handle Pidgin and mixed English reasonably well. Test with real messages and add examples to the instructions where it struggles.
