If you want to earn from AI automation, you need a tool that connects apps and moves information between them. Three names come up again and again: Zapier, Make and n8n. Each is good, but they suit different people, and picking the right one first can save you months.
This guide compares all three in plain language so you can choose with confidence.
What no-code automation tools actually do
Every automation tool works on the same idea: a trigger starts the workflow, and one or more actions follow.
For example: when a new row is added to a Google Sheet (trigger), send a WhatsApp message to the customer, create an invoice, and notify the manager (actions). Add an AI step and the workflow can also write the message, summarise a document or decide which action to take.
No-code tools let you build these workflows by clicking and dragging rather than writing code. If you're new to the concept, start with our guide to what AI automation is.
Zapier: the easiest place to start
Zapier builds workflows, called Zaps, as a simple step-by-step list. It connects to thousands of apps, and many businesses already have an account.
- Strengths: very gentle learning curve, a huge app library, built-in AI steps, and clients' teams can usually understand and edit what you build.
- Weaknesses: it charges by the number of tasks a workflow performs, so costs climb with volume. Complex branching logic can feel clumsy.
- Best for: complete beginners, simple linear workflows, and clients who want something their staff can maintain.
Make: visual and flexible
Make (formerly Integromat) uses a visual canvas where you see your workflow as connected bubbles. It handles branching, loops and data transformation well.
- Strengths: powerful logic, clear visual layout, and generally better value for high-volume or multi-step workflows.
- Weaknesses: a steeper learning curve than Zapier, and data mapping can confuse beginners at first.
- Best for: multi-step workflows with conditions, processing lists of data, and freelancers who want more control.
n8n: power and control
n8n is a fair-code tool you can use on its cloud plan or host on your own server. It has strong building blocks for AI agents and lets you drop in code when you need it.
- Strengths: excellent AI and agent features, self-hosting for clients with data privacy needs, and flexibility for advanced projects.
- Weaknesses: the most technical of the three. Self-hosting means you manage a server, updates and backups.
- Best for: AI agents, technical freelancers, and clients with high volume or strict data requirements.

Plans and limits change often, so check each tool's pricing page before quoting a client.
Which tool should you learn first?
- You're a complete beginner: spend a week or two on Zapier to understand triggers and actions, then move to Make.
- You want freelance gigs quickly: Zapier and Make both appear regularly in freelance job posts. Go deep on one of them.
- You're excited about AI agents: learn n8n once you're comfortable with the basics. Our guide on building an AI agent without coding is a good next step.
The concepts transfer. Once you understand triggers, actions, filters and data mapping, switching tools takes days, not months.
Practical tips for Nigerian learners
- Free plans are enough to learn. You don't need to pay anything to build your first projects.
- Paying in dollars: naira cards often hit limits on international subscriptions. Use a dollar virtual card, or better still, build client projects on the client's own account so they own and pay for it.
- Power and internet: workflows run in the cloud, not on your laptop. Once a workflow is live, a power cut on your side won't stop it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Zapier free?
Zapier has a free plan with limits on tasks and features. It is enough to learn the basics. Check the current limits on its pricing page.
Is n8n better than Make?
Not better, just different. n8n gives more control and suits AI agents. Make is easier for complex visual workflows without managing a server.
Can I get paid knowing only one tool?
Yes. Many clients ask for a specific tool. Mastering one deeply beats knowing three shallowly, and you can pick up the others as clients request them.
